Description of Work

​

Detention officers perfrom professtional work within the W.E. "Billy" Smith Detention Center, with responsibilty for maintaining the safety, security, and orderly operation of the facility. Responsibilities include supervising inmates in assigned areas, monitoring inmate activity, responding to incidents and emergencies, enforcing facility rules and procedures, and performing other detention-related duties as assigned.

Detention officers are expected to remain alert, tactful, and firm while performing their duties in accordance with the policies, procedures, instructions, and directives of the Lenoir County Sheriff's Office. Officers serve as members of an assigned shift and report to higher-ranking supervisors. Work is performed under the direct and general supervision of supervisory personnel and in accordance with established standard operating procedures.

​​Work Environment

​

Detention work involves exposure to the usual hazards associated with a correctional facility, including potentially dangerous individuals, loud noises, and both indoor and outdoor working environments. Officers may work in extreme hot or cold weather conditions and may be exposed to human blood or bodily fluids. This position is subject to OSHA requirements regarding bloodborne pathogens.
