Major Ryan Dawson
Major Dawson is the Chief Deputy for Lenoir County and he is responsible for all administrative and business procedures of the Sheriff's Office. He oversees the other operational divisions that are led by Captains of the Sheriff's Office.
Major Ryan Dawson began his career with the Lenoir County Sheriff's Office in 2003 and worked his way through many assignments including detention officer, court bailiff, patrol deputy, field training officer, detective, SRT Operator and Sergeant of CCRT. He has a Bachelor's Degree from Appalachian State University in Criminal Justice, completed an internship with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, and served as the class president of his BLET class at Lenoir Community College. In 2014, Major Dawson graduated from the Law Enforcement Executive Program at NC State University.
Major Dawson has been awarded the Medal of Valor, Law Enforcement Purple Heart and his Advanced Law Enforcement Certification from the NC Sheriff's Education, Training and Standards Commission. He has also been chosen as the recipient of the Kinston Free Press Top "20 under 40", NC Fraternal Order of Police Officer of the Year Award, Woodman of the World Honor and Valor award, a commendation from North Carolina Governor Beverly Perdue and was chosen at the 2019 Wheat Swamp Ruitian Citizen of the Year. Major Dawson is a Lenoir County native and third generation deputy sheriff for Lenoir County following the footsteps of his grandfather and father.
